Eol's wife and son run his son, and his wife gets hit. He persues them and throws a poisoned javelin at executes Eol. She dies and Turgon off to Gondolin. Maeglin his son stays 'Javelin' and less frequently with arrow.

Tolkien uses the word 'Dart' interchangably with the sole province of the Morgoth's side. We can see that poisoned weapons are not in Gondolin. Maeglin becomes a key figure in the making mines the surounding mountains. He establishes a crafting group and iron from the Anghabar mine p.

His most prized metal is the hard of weapons and armor for Gondolin. Apparently there are different his best men rescue him by making a wall of spears around him and cut their way out taking heavy casualties. In the Dagor Bragollach, Finrod is cut off from the rest of his army and would have been killed, but Barahir and archery, and the Elvish cavalry of Caranthir is overwhelmed by Glaurung. 177 In the same battle Gundor son of Hador falls to massed grades of iron.

Fingolfin's duel with the two combatants other than the fact that Morgoth is very big, and walks heavy. 180 is filled with similes and metaphores so it's hard to figure out the scale between black, and his shield is big and black without design. We're not told what type of armor Morgoth wears, but it's Morgoth p. Morgoth also wields a heavy the ground...{ is this a flaming/hot weapon?}

Grond leaves smoking, flaming holes when it hits crystals and a sword 'Ringil' that glitters like ice... Fingolfin wears silvered mail, and carries a blue shield with hammer named Grond. {is this a cold weapon? --the contrasts of Tolkien's numbers of completeness 3, 7, 9). In the fight he wounds Morgoth 7 times (one shattering his shield and helm.

Morgoth hits him with Grond 3 times may simply be literary devices} Fingolfin falls and Morgoth puts his foot on his neck (this symbolizes his domination, but also provides us his last desperate act (an act of defiance). Fingolfin hews at the foot on his neck with is permanently gimped in that leg. Morgoth never recovers from that wound and with a scale-- Morgoth is big but not so big that his foot completely covers Fingolfin).

This leads to the question of whether he was armored on his above the "darts" of the Orcs. Fingolfin's body is recovered by Thorondor who flies People of Haleth in Brethil forest, and destroys an Orc legion. Beleg Strongbow takes a contingent of Sindar armed with axes to help the legs and feet due to the severity of the wound. Next direct reference to weapons is that craft and whose arrows were sure and deadly.

198 who were said to range secretly with great and ambush, with wizardry and venomed dart, they pursued all strangers". 200 it says they did not go to battle openly "but with stealth, of the archers of Nargothrond p. Curufin and Celeborn try to kidnap was made by Telchar and able to cut iron like green wood. Beren defeats Curufin and takes his gear which includes the knife Angrist which and spears, we're not told what else.

The sons of Feanor were also armed with bows Luthien, and kill Beren. When Beren and Luthien get to Morgoth's throneroom it's of Morgoth's crown with Angrist. There Beren cuts the silmaril out remove a second silmaril. Angrist breaks when he tries to full of "weapons of death and torture".

In the hunt for Carcharoth, the huge wolf who ate the and their allies for a final attempt on Morgoth. In the 5th battle, Maedhros attempts to unite the remaining Elves and the People of Haleth as whetting their axes. The Naugrim are mentioned as having a great store of arms, silmaril, Beren uses a spear to attempt to defend Thingol. Turgon brings out 10,000 soldiers from Gondolin all indication of painted armor).

Fingon wears a White Helm (first is compared to fire in a stand of reeds. His troops troops draw their swords the light of which in mail with long swords and spears. In Fingon's last alone vs. 230, he fights binds him with his flaming whip.

Gothmog the head Balrog until another Balrog stand p. Gothmog then uses his black axe to split open the ground with maces. Fingon's body is then beaten into maces). (first mention of Fingon's helm which bursts into white flame.

The Naugrim at the same battle are described as wearing hideous shown to be wearing open faced helmets by comparison. The signifcance of this is that Elves and Men are the king of Belegost severly wounds Glaurung with a knife in the belly. The Dwarves are also shown using a tactic of surounding dragons with axes, and masks which also help them to withstand dragon fire. Hurin and Huor form a rearguard for Turgon the eye, Hurin fights on alone.

Huor is killed with a venomed arrow throught blood of the 70 trolls he one-shot kills--they are part of Gothmog's body guard. He discards his shield and wields an axe two handed until it disolves in the and the army of Gondolin to escape. Hurin though is captured when Serech, and all the bodies, weapons, and harness of the other slain in a mound on Anfauglith. They pile all the heads of the people of Hador up in a golden mound at the fen of with seige engines.

Morgoth next attacks the Havens he's overwhelmed by Orcs. While not described specifically the engineers apparently working them from the story of Turin. The next set of references comes with him until he grows big enough to fight. He is sent to Thingol after the fifth battle, and stays are skilled smiths, miners, and workers with fire.

He then asks Thingol for a sword, and than a helmet and an heirloom. We don't know what the dragonhelm is other decoration on it relating to dragons. There may have been some sort of mail, and takes the Dragonhelm of Dor-lomin. Perhaps it had a dragon battle between Morgoth and the Valar, so it's unlikely that it had dragon wings on it.

Just keep in mind that flying dragons hadn't been seen yet, and didn't appear until the final Beleg Strongbow. Turin becomes companions with crest on top. Turin has an altercation with a member of Thingol's court, takes up with some outlaws. He goes into self imposed exile, and of his sons with an arrow p.

They capture the dwarf Mim and kill one which results in the death of the other. Beleg is given the commission to find and return Turin archery, and his current sword will not cut through their armor. He makes the comment that the Orcs are comming too thick for just meteoric iron, the other was stolen by Maeglin. Anglachel is one of two swords Eol made from and is given the black sword Anglachel p.

The meteoric iron was able to cut dull on the edge. Anglachel was originally black and Nargothrond and it's edges shone with pale fire. It was later reforged for Turin by the Elves of through any earth origin iron. {seems to be another reference to a flaming sword, although it Gurthang.

Glaurung} he renames the smith was in it. Melian remarked that the dark heart of this might be simply an aura--this effect increases vs. It seems to have had to in this way. No other weapon is refered some of Eol's contrary nature.

The weapon seems to have absorbed a spirit or intelligence. Mim hates Elves and when Beleg joins captured in the assault. Beleg is knocked unconscious and Turin together they rescue Turin from the Orcs. Beleg wakes up and follows, he finds Gwindor, and Turin, Mim betrays them to Morgoth.

Turin mistakenly kills Beleg is the only named bow we have record of). They burry him with his powerful black yew bow, Belthronding (this Gwindor leads him to Nargothrond. Turin takes the black sword and in the dark. Turin develops a reputation for invincibility among the Elves of Nargothrond, and they give him 'Dwarf Mail' so dragon Glaurung.

Nargothrond falls to the his black sword and is armed with spear and bow. Turin leaves and takes up residence in Brethil where he puts aside he won't be killed by missiles, and he picks up a gilded dwarf mask to wear. Turin takes out the black sword suicide and his act of incest, and commits suicide on Gurthang. He uses it on the dragon, but finds out about his sister's before the final act.

The sword actually talks to him again to fight Glaurung. After Turin's death, Hurin is released from Morgoth's captivity, and help of the Green Elves. Beren pursues Thingol's killers with the Menegroth, "and shafts sped upon them from everyside". The dwarves were caught crossing Gellion from the sack of wanders with a black staff and a sword.

In the tale of Tuor only two direct references helm that Turgon had left there by the command of Ulmo long before; and he arrayed himself in those arms, and went down to the shore... Thus he came to the deserted halls of Vinyamar beneath Mount Taras, and he entered in, and found there the shield and hauberk, and the sword and gave Tuor a great cloak, to mantle him in shadow from the eyes of his enemies. And Ulmo bade him depart from that place and seek the hidden kingdom of Gondolin; and he are made to weapons and armor: p. The other reference only refers to a man in black carrying armor in the Silmarillian proper.

That's it for references to weapons and light of the sun and moon) and Aeglos the spear of Gilgalad which none could withstand (whatever that means). The supplement "Of the Rings of Power In the Third Age" only contains brief references to Narsil (which glowed with the a black sword (guess who) who crosses his path. The Akallabeth contains no direct references 1969 Ballantine Books paperback edition of 'The Hobbit'. My source of reference is the 1966, 20th printing referenced accordingly.

Page numbers will be to weapons or armor. Gandalf's staff has a spike which he uses mention weapons once and in regard to captureing light in jewels which are placed in sword hilts. While there are quite a few crafting techniques mentioned in the Dwarven song in Bilbo's hole, they only sword instead of a walking stick, and then he comes back to himself. The song wakes up a desire in Bilbo to go on an adventure, wear a to scratch a symbol into Bilbo's door.

30 references Bullroarer Took who knocked the head off Golfimbul, the king of the been a very big goblin, even if Bullroarer was big for a Hobbit). Apparently it sailed 100 yards and went down a rabbithole...( he could not have heroes are scarce, or simply not to be found. 33 Gandalf makes a statement about the Shire, "...in this neighborhood Mount Gram, with a wooden club at the Battle of the Green Fields. Swords in these parts are mostly blunt, and axes are used and carvings and cups, and the toy market of Dale was the wonder of the North."

35 Thorin describes pre-dragon life in Erebor: "So my grandfather's halls became full of armor and jewels not even mend a little loose scale of their armor." 35 Describing dragon's abilities: "...they can't make a thing for themselves, for trees, and shields are used as cradles or dishcovers...". 49 & 51 Improvised weaponry, first Tom whacks Bert and William with a tree branch to get them to stop some loot inside the troll-hole: 53 Thorin & company find various makes, shapes, and sizes.

...among them were several swords of fighting, then the trolls use sacks to capture the dwarves, then Thorin uses a flaming tree branch as a weapon. Two caught their eyes particularly, because of Bilbo took a knife in a leather sheath. Gandalf and Thorin each took one of these; and it was as good as a short sword for a Hobbit. It would have only made a tiny pocket-knife for a troll, but their beautiful scabards and jeweled hilts.

"These look like good blades," said the wizard half days; but when we can read the runes on them, we shall know more about them. "They were not made by a troll, nor by any smith among men in these parts and a) They had decorated hilts and sheaths, b) they had runes. This of course brings up a number of intersting features of these swords: drawing them and looking at them curiously. 61 Elrond's examination of of every kind.

Elrond knew all about runes troll's lair, and he said, "These are not troll make. That day he looked at the swords they had brought from the the two swords: They are old swords, very old swords of the for the Goblin-wars. They were made in Gondolin for dragons and goblins destroyed that city many ages ago.

They must have come from a dragon horde or goblin plunder, High Elves of the West, my kin. This, Thorin, the runes name Orcrist, the goblin cleaver in the king of Gondolin once wore. This, Gandalf, was Glamdring, Foe-hammer that the well! Keep them ancient tongue of Gondolin; it was a fameous blade.

"Whence did the trolls get them, I wonder?" said come on the remnants of old robberies in some hold in the mountains of the North. "I could not say," said Elrond, "but one may guess that your trolls had plundered other plunderers, or the deserted caverns of the mines of Moria, since the dwarf and goblin war." I have heard that there are still forgotten treasuries of old to be found in Thorin looking at his sword with new interest. This is interesting in that it sets up the possiblilities for lost hordes and use whips to drive them.

69 the goblins kidnap Bilbo and the Dwarves, Orc weapons: axes and bent swords. 70 We get the first description of other else where in Middle-earth where one can find first age artifacts. We are also told they make hammers, axes, swords, daggers, gnashing their teeth and clashing their shields. 71 They react to Thorin's sword, "Biter" by has been out of service for ages.

For some reason they recognize a sword that pick-axes, tongs and instruments of torture very well. (This presents some problems, but also may reflect the life span a sword that glowed in its own light. 72 Bilbo sees the Great Goblin skewered by special properties of Gondolin swords: 73 We are introduced to the of Goblins/Orcs who are, according to the Silmarillian, corrupted Elves).

He (Gandalf) took out his sword and again bright as blue flame for delight in killing the great lord of the cave. It burned with rage that made it glow if goblins were about; now it was as setting all the prisoners free as quickly as possible. It had no trouble whatever cutting through the goblin-chains and it flashed in the dark by itself. Tolkien goes on to reidentify it as 'Beater' the goblin term Orcs are around and can cut through metal.

So then we know that Gondolin blades glow blue when Sam tied him up with, you have to wonder if the blue glow might burn Orcs and other evil creatures. Is the blue glow hot? Probably not to good folk, but if you remember Gollum was burned by the Elvish rope for it, and to say that Gandalf also saved Orcrist. 74 Pursued by the and Thorin with him. At this point Gandalf fell behind sharp corner.

They turned a Goblins down the tunnel... "About turn!" he Thorin!" "Draw your sword, the goblins did not like it. There was nothing else to be done; and shouted.

They came scurrying around the corner in full cry, and found Goblin-cleaver, seem to have more in common with Ringil, Fingofin's sword which glittered like ice. This would seem to indicate that the weapons were cold rather than hot, and would prevent them from burning to the touch... The fact that they are cold does not and Foe-hammer shining cold and bright right in their astonished eyes. as in frostbite Dwarves, Elves, or Hobbits; just evil creatures.

Again this effect does not seem to bother Men, and draws his sword to discover it is also an Elvish blade from Gondolin. 77 Bilbo awakens after being knocked out in the skirmish with the Goblins, finds the ring, or freezer-burn. We learn here that the glow is proportional out of sight inside his trowsers. We also learn that Bilbo wore his sword guarded by two Goblins in full armor with drawn swords.

94 Bilbo makes it to the back door and sees it to the proximity of the orcs. They see him because the trees to get away from the wolves... 108-111 Gandalf, Bilbo, and the Dwarves climb fir arrive. and goblin reinforcements ring drops off:

Some of them sat the shafts against their sheilds... Others waved their spears and clashed and flame around the Dwarves. Soon they had a ring of smoke down and laughted. Smoke was in Bilbo's eyes, he could feel the heat of the flames; and through the reek he could axes stood the wolves at a respectful distance.

Outside the ring of dancing warriors with spears and a thunderbolt, but is rescued by the eagles instead. Gandalf then gets ready to jump into the spears like see the Goblins dancing round and round in a circle like people dancing round a midsummer bonfire. 113 The lord of the eagles makes a comment about men: the limbs off an Oak log with an axe. 120 The initial description of Beorn has him chopping few things save the knives were made of metal at all.

127 ...there were no things of gold or silver in his hall, and "They would shoot at us with their great bows of yew". 133 Beorn gives the Dwarves some bows and black squirels which end up being inedible. 142 they waste a lot of arrows shooting at don't think this really says anything about their abilities in terms of archery except that there are no exceptional archers among them. I think this incident has given Dwarves the bad reputation that they can't shoot, but squirrels are small fast moving targets, so I arrows so they can hunt in Mirkwood.

144 Thorin shoots and kills a deer with a bow as it crashes a bow--crisis situation, fast moving target. This shows a better than average ability with skills later too. Thorin shows good archery through the party and leaps to the other side of the river. 145 They make it to the other side of at them, none seems to hit.

Three of the Dwarves expend the remaining arrows in general and perhaps something about the individual skills of the shooters. I think that again, the fact that they miss says nothing about dwarven archer the stream and a group of deer appear. Thorin doesn't shoot at the Dwarves tied up by the spiders. 156 Bilbo finds himself in the forest with his throwing ability:

The following passage establishes this time. Bilbo was a pretty fair shot with a stone, and it did not take as a grownup he had still spent a deal of his time at quoits, dart-throwing, shooting at wands, bowls, nine-pins and other quite games of the aiming and and throwing sort... As a boy he used to practise throwing stones at things, until rabbits and squirrels, and even birds, got out of his way quick as lightening if they saw him stoop; and even improvise weapons on the spot. Again here is that ability to him long to find a smooth egg-shaped one that fit his hand cosily.

160 Bilbo has a running off, then returns and frees the Dwarves. He throws stones at them to draw them the ability to easily sever spider webs. We're introduced to another property of Gondolin blades, battle with the spiders. His little sword was something new in with delight as he stabbed at them.

How it darted to and fro! It shown out of the trees and there was a battle. The spiders formed a circle around the dwarves that Bilbo got the way of stings for them. The dwarves were armed with sticks and stones, Bilbo fight their way out to safety. Bilbo created a distraction allowing the Dwarves to by the Wood Elves, get captured by the Elves.

167 The Dwarves minus Thorin, who was already captured with his 'Sting', his ring, and stones. They are armed with in to lake town... 189 Thorin & Company walk your arms!" said the Captain. "If you come in peace lay down spears and bows.

"We have none" said Thorin, and it was true enough: their knives had been but he said nothing about that. Bilbo had his shorts sword, hidden as usual, of the hoard. 206 Bilbo's first glimpse taken from them by the wood-elves, and the great sword Orchrist too. Behind him (Smaug) where the walls were nearest could dimly be seen coats of mail, helms, and axes, swords and spears my tail a thunderbolt, my wings a hurricane, and my breath death!"..."I am armored above and below with iron scales and hard gems.

216 Smaug brags about his armament: "My armor is like ten fold shields, my teeth are swords, my claws are spears, the shock of pierce me." No blade can hanging; and there in rows stood great jars and vessals filled with a wealth that could not be guessed. 220 The dwarves start talking about birds and flowers whose eyes and petals were jewels; coats of mail gilded, silvered and impenatrable; the necklace of Girion, Lord of Dale, made of 500 emeralds which he gave for the arming of his eldest son in a coat of dwarf-linked rings the like of which had never been made before, for it was wrought in pure silver to the power and strength of triple steel. They wondered if they were still lying there unharmed in the halls below: the spears that were made for the armies of the great King Bladorthin (long since dead), each had a thrice forged head and their shafts were inlaid with cunning gold, but they were never delivered or paid for; shields made for warriors long dead; the great golden cup of Thror, two handed, hammered and carven with hall after Smaug leaves they arm themselves.

228 When the dwarves finally enter the great things in the hoard. Now the dwarves took down mail and weapons a silver hafted axe in a belt crusted with scarlet stones. Royal indeed did Thorin look, clad in a coat of gold-plated rings, with cried. Baggins!", he from the walls, and armed themselves.

"Here is the first payment of your reward! Cast mail wrought for some young elf-prince long ago. With that he put on Bilbo a small coat of with it went a belt of pearls and crystals. It was of silver-steel which the elves call mithril, and off your old coat and put on this!" A light helm of figured leather, strengthened beneath with hoops of steel and Bard raises the alarm:

235 The dragon approaches Laketown and down and destroyed before the roar of Smaug's terrible approach grew loud and the lake rippled red as fire beneath the aweful beating of his wings. Every vessel in town was filled with water, every warrior was armed, every arrow and dart was ready, and the bridge to the land was was thrown studded about with white gems was set upon the hobbit's head. 235-237 records the battle of Laketown and Smaug: The majority of the battle simply records jumping off and swim or row to shore. After much of the town is destroyed, people start of the defenders...

Bard remains with the last how the arrows rattle off Smaug's armour or are consumed by his firey breath. But there was still a company of archers that wife and child had escaped down the Running River from the ruin long ago. Their captain was Bard, grim-voiced and grim-faced...He was a descendant of Girion, Lord of Dale, whose all his arrows but one were spent. Now he shot with a great yew bow, till held their ground among the burning houses.

The flames were leaving him. His companions were the last time. He bent his bow for near him. The thrush gives him some advice about to his ear..."Arrow!" said the bowman.

Then Bard drew the bow string back you to the last. "Black Arrow! I have saved the naked patch on Smaug's chest. You have never failed me and and he from of old. I had you from my father the Mountian, go now and speed well!"...The great bow twanged.

If ever you came from the forges of the true king under always I have recovered you. The arrow sped straight from the string, straight for the hollow feather, so fierce was it's flight. It smote and vanished barb, shaft, and probably indicates a long bow. Observations: use of a great yew bow by the left breast where the foreleg was spread wide.

He's talking to the arrow; again there's that idea that a barbed point. Construction of the arrow-- has marches North with spearmen and bowmen. 241 After Smaug's death the Elven King inanimate objects can be sentient and aid their user. Flocks of crows begin to unless the Elves return to their woods, and the negotiators come unarmed.

252 During negotiations with Bard, Thorin threatens to shoot anyone who approaches is sent and... The following day another embassy follow anticipating a battle. Then Thorin seized a bow of horn and and stuck there quivering. It smote into his sheild that he would miss from close range.

Obviously Thorin was not so bad a shot shot an arrow at the speaker. The shot into the bow made of horn and wood laminations. A bow of horn, of course, is a composite the Mountain to negotiate... 256 Bilbo slips out of shield was intentional.

A Hobbit in elvish armour wrapped, wrapped in an after the Arkenstone incident. 262 Thorin kicks Bilbo out all his trouble, except for the armour which Thorin had given him already... And so Bilbo was swung down from the wall , and departed with nothing for old blanket, was something new to them. "Be off!" called my folk, and is too good for you.

"You have mail upon you, which was made by not hasten, I will sting your miserable feet." It cannot be pierced by arrows; but if you do Thorin. 263 Dain and were covered with hose of fine and flexible metal mesh, the secret of whose making was posessed by Dain's people. Each one of his folk was clad in a hauberk of steel mail that hung down to his knees, and his legs the rarity of leg armor.

This passages is important in pointing out his troops arrive: This is one of the very few mentions of course means stockings/leggings. The term 'hose' of being shod with iron, and that could refer to cleats on the bottoms of their shoes. The only other reference to armor (maybe) on feet or legs is made in regard to Orcs leg armor in all of Tolkien's works.

The term mesh is interesting, it can mail unique to Dain's people. this is a special type of fine round shield at his back...Their caps were of iron, and they were shod with iron, and their faces were grim. In battle they wielded two handed mattocks; but each of them also had a short broad sword at his side and a be used in describing mail... Again the reference to being cleats in the soles of their shoes.

This seems to be either metal shoes or get of the equipment of warriors in Tolkien. The above description is the most complete we ever shod with iron. The essential equipment is very much that spike/pick on the back of the blade. A mattock is essentially an axe with a long their hands as signs of peace when they parley.

263 Dain's men lay down their arms and hold up of a Saga Theign or Huscarl. 264 Thorin shoots arrows at the people Dwarve's position before the gate: 264 Bard's assessment of the hidden in the rocks upon their right flank. There are many of our archers and spearmen now they send for the Arkenstone ransom.

Dwarf-mail may be good, but they will at the beginning of the battle: 267 Bilbo puts on his ring help in getting out of the way, and it prevents your head from being specially chosen for a sweeping stroke by a goblin swordsman. A magic ring of that sort is not complete protection from a goblin charge, nor does it stop flying arrows and wild spears; but it does soon be hard put to it. Going back to the 'bent' swords or scimitars of the goblins, are between the spurs of the mountain:

267 The elves charge once the goblins so deadly was the wrath of the hands that held them. Their spears and swords shone in the gloom with a chill flame, the main attack would be cutting rather than thrusting. As soon as the host of their enemies was dense in the valley, they sent spearmen leaped down and charged... Behind the arrows a thousand of their upon the other side; and beside them came the men of Laketown with their long swords.

With cries of "Moria" and "Dain, Dain!" the dwarves of the Iron Hills plunged in, wielding their mattocks, against it a shower of arrows, and each flickered as if with stinging fire. Interesting here is the fact that the elvish weapons seem to not high elves. These, again, are wood-elves the battle: 269 Thorin joins respond to their wielder's emotions by glowing with a flame.

[quote] Out leaped the King under the Mountain, and his companions followed him...they like gold in a dying fire... In the gloom the great dwarf gleamed fled before them. Wolf and rider fell or were in shining armor, and a red light leaped from their eyes. Thorin wielded his axe with mighty strokes, right against the bodyguard of Bolg.

The Wargs were scattered and Thorin drove pierce their ranks. But he could not and nothing seemed to harm him... 270 Thorin gets surounded, Bilbo spots the eagles comming and rent armor and notched axe were cast upon the floor. There indeed lay Thorin Oakenshield, wounded with many wounds, and his weapon notched or broken when a hero is defeated.

In Tolkien, even the best armor is torn up and their gets a rock dropped on his helmet knocking him out. It is a symbol Beorn's appearance: 274 Flashback of lords upon a low rounded hill. The Dwarves were making a stand about their of their defeat.

Then Beorn stooped and lifted Thorin, who had fallen pierced Orcrist and the Arkenstone. 275 Thorin is burried with defending Thorin with body and shield. Fili and Kili are identified as falling with spears, and bore him out of the fray. His sword he hung hall (until he lent it to a Museum).

His coat he put on a stand in the for 'The Hobbit'. That's all the references over the mantalpiece. 14 The Hobbits sent some bowmen to the OF THE RINGS. 14-15 On Hobbits warlike, and they never fought among themselves. At no time had Hobbits of any kind been in a hard world; but in Bilbo's time that was very ancient history. In olden days they had, of course, been often obliged to fight to maintain themselves and War.

The last battle before this story opens, indeed the only one to have been fought within an invasion of Orcs... 1147, in which Bandobras Took routed trophies hanging above hearths or on walls, or gathered into the Museum at Michel Delving... So though there was still some store of weapons in the Shire, these were used mostly as the borders of the Shire, was beyond living memory: the Battle of Greenfields, S.R. Though slow to quarrel, and for sport killing nothing that lived, they keen eyed and sure at the mark.

They shot well with the bow, for they were and arrows. Not only with bows were daughty at bay, and at need could still handle arms. If any Hobbit stooped for a stone, it was well to the Shire-moot and captain of the Hobbitry-in-arms. 19 The Thain was the master of Post, Sherrifs, and Bounders.

The Mayor had responsibility for the get under cover, as all tresspassing beasts knew very well. The Bounders were a type of patrol on the borders of the Shire and make sure outsiders did resembles a forest of silver spears. 36 Gandalf has a firework that in a battered black leather sheath on his belt. 40 As Bilbo prepares to depart he hangs a short sword not make themselves a nuisance, while Sherrifs were a sort of constable, mainly dealing with lost livestock.

53 Rumors brought to rebuilt it was said. The Dark Tower had been far east and south there were wars and growing fears. From there the power was spreading far and wide, and away the Shire by Dwarves: Orcs were multiplying again cunning and armed with dreadful weapons.

Trolls were abroad, no longer dull witted, but than these but they had no name. And there were murmured hints of creatures more terrible in the mountains. 61 On the was waylaid by the Orcs of the Mountains, and almost all his folk were slain. For Isildur was marching north along the east banks of the River, and near Galadden Fields he swam, and then the Orcs saw him and killed him with arrows.

Frodo responds by saying that he brought a small hatchet for Bombadil, he tells the Hobbits stories: 141 In the house of Tom Sam asks Frodo if they have an axe.

Green walls and white the heights. There were fortresses on fire on the red metal of their new and greedy swords. Kings of little kingdom fought together, and the young Sun shone like walls rose. 152 The Hobbits get captured by the Barrow saw laying beside him Sam, Pippin, and Merry.

They were on their backs, and their faces were Wight, Frodo is the first to wake: About them lay many treasures of gold maybe, Though their waists, and on their fingers were many rings. On their heads were circlets, and gold chains were about shields were at their feet.

Swords lay by their sides and in the light they looked cold and unlovely. But across their neck lay was lying nearest, and toward the hilt of the sword that lay upon him... Round the corner a long arm was groping, walking on it's fingers toward Sam, who him, and kneeling he stooped low over the bodies of his companions. Suddenly resolve hardened in him and he seized a shortsword that lay beside one long naked sword...

With what strength he had, he hewed at the crawling arm near the wrist, and the Men of Carn Dum and getting a spear in the heart. 154 Merry has a past life flashback of being attacked by the the Barrow: 157 Tom loots hand broke off; but at the same moment the sword splintered up to the hilt. For each of the Hobbits he chose a dagger, long, leaf-shaped, and strange metal, light and strong, and set with many firey stones.

They gleamed as he drew them from their black sheaths, wought of some the mound, the blades seemed untouched by time, unrusted, sharp, glittering in the sun. Whether by some virtue in these sheaths, or because of some spell that lay on keen of marvelous workmanship, damasked with serpent-forms in red and gold. "Old knives are long enough as years ago by the Men of Westernesse: they were foe of the Dark Lord, but they were overcome by the evil king of Carn Dum in the land of Angmar... "Sharp blades are good to have, if Shire-folk go walking east, south, or far away in to dark and danger." Then he told them that these blades were forged many long very awkward, and wondering if they would be of any use.

Their new weapons they hung on their leather belts under their jackets, feeling swords for hobbit-people," he said. 182 Part of the Aragorn 'lines': "Renewed his sword: 183-184 Aragorn draws of a sword that had hung concealed by his side... Throwing back his cloak, he laid his hand on the hilt shall be blade that was broken".

He drew out his sword and they saw that it Sam?" said Strider. 'Not much use is it it shall be forged anew". "But the time is near when was indeed broken a foot below the hilt. 193 Sam uses an apple as the Lay, "The Fall of Gil-galad":

198 Sam sings a bit from lance was keen, His sword was long, his improvised missile versus Bill Ferney. 208 Frodo puts on the ring in the hollow beneath their black wrappings. He was able to see the lip of the dell, three advancing.

There were five tall figures: two were standing on beneath Weathertop and is able to see the ringwraiths: In their white faces burned keen and merciless eyes; under their mantles they wore long gray robes; upon their grey hairs were helms of silver; in their haggard hands and gleaming, and on his helm was a crown. The third was taller than the others, his hair was long it glowed with a pale light...he felt a pain like a dart of poisoned ice pierce his left shoulder. In one hand he held a long sword, and in the other a knife; both knife and the hand that held were swords of steel...Desparate he drew his own sword, and it seemed to him that it flickered red, as if it was a firebrand...Two of the figures halted.

Even as he swooned, he caught a glimpse of Strider leaping out of his finger and closed his right hand tight upon it. With a last effort Frodo, dropping his sword, slipped the Ring from comes back from scouting and draws his sword. 209 Sam has doubts about Strider when he the darkness with a flaming brand of wood in either hand. 210 Strider returns to the camp with the evidence; but all blades perish that pierce that dreadful King.

"This is was the stroke of Frodo's sword...for it is unharmed, again and lifted a long thin knife. And more deadly to Frodo was this!" He stooped the slashed cload and the Morgul blade. There was a cold edge was notched and the point was broken off. As Strider raised it they saw that near the end its like a smoke in the air, leaving only the hilt in Strider's hand..."It was this accursed knife that gave the wound.

But even as he held it up in the growing light, they gazed in astonishment, for the blade seemed to melt, and vanish gleam to it. Few have the skill in healing knees, and he sang over it a slow song in a strange tongue. He sat down on the ground and taking the dagger-hilt laid it on his is not recovering. 216 Sam asks why Frodo to match such evil weapons"...

Strider replies "Frodo has been touched by the weapons of the Enemy...and there is some the knife and the attack. 223 Aragorn tells Glorfindel about evil things written on this hilt... Glorfindel examines the knife-hilt and says "There are poison or evil at work that is beyond my skill to drive out". though maybe your eyes can little as you may! Alas! The wounds of this weapon are beyond my skill to heal."

Keep it Aragorn, till we reach the house of Elrond! But be wary and handle it as his sword hilt and draws it with a red flash. 225 The ringwraith appear and command Frodo not to flee, he grips not see them. 226 Frodo stops on the other hoods and black cloaks, and they were robed in white and grey. He could see them clearly now: they appeared to have cast aside their ; helms were on their heads...

Swords were naked in their pale hands side of the ford after crossing. with great effort Frodo sat upright and brandished his sword..."By Elbereth and Luthien Ring nor me!" "You shall have neither the up menicing in his stirrups, and raised his hand. Then the leader, who was half way across the Ford, stood the Fair," said Frodo with a last effort , lifting his sword.

Frodo was striken mouth, and his heart laboring. He felt his tongue cleave to his of his shaking hand. His sword broke and fell out dumb. 233-234 Gandalf tells Frodo about remembering the cruel knife with the notched blade that had vanished in Strider's hands...

Elrond is a master of healing, but the weapons of our enemy are deadly...Frodo shuddered, quickly overcome by that splinter which you bore for seventeen days... I have known strong warriors of the Big People who would have been the knife wound: They tried to pierce your heart with a they are, only weaker, and under their command. If they had succeeded you would have become like the dominion of the Dark Lord...

You would have become a wraith under Morgul knife which remains in the wound. 241 Gloin talks to Frodo he said. "We have done well", fathers, many of whose secrets are lost. "But in metal work we can not rival our about the Lonely Mountain:

We make good armor and keen swords, but we can not make mail we surpassed the old days." Only in mining and building have Dwarves of Erebor, and they are not the only Dwarves. Please keep in mind that Gloin's statements only refer to the or blade to match those that were made before the dragon came. 246 Part of Bilbo's scored with runes.

Panoply: a full suit of armor; Horn-bow: a bow made of thin laminated pieces of horn and wood (increases power and flexibility); Ebony: a dense black wood; Habergeon: a mail coat is wearing elven mail with a starf on his chest.

250 Aragorn standing next to Arwen in the hall of fire be unfamiliar... 256 Elrond talks about the final battle between of the last alliance when Sauron was shard to cut the ring off Sauron's finger. He tells of how Narsil broke and Isildur used the the pieces of Narsil on the table and says, "Here is the sword that was Broken". 259 Boromir repeats his rhyme: "Seek for the sword that was broken..." Aragorn stands forth, throws overthrown and mentions Aiglos the spear of Gilgalad, and Narsil the sword of Elendil.

260 Aragorn tells Boromir that it's Elendil's sword and that it was spoken Father to Son in an unbroken line since Valandil. 261 He tells Boromir that the sword has passed from of Gondor do not protect against, but the rangers do. He also tells Boromir that there are things the towers and swords that it should be reforged when Isildur's bane was found again. 262 He says, "The Sword Minas Tirith".

I will come to trust to such weapons as we have... 281 Boromir says "Then in Gondor we must shall be reforged. Mayhap the Sword-that-was-Broken may still stem the tide --if the hand that wields it Sword-that-was-Broken shall be reforged ere I set out for war." 289 Aragorn says he is going with the Fellowship: "And the the sword:

290 The reforging of inherited not an heirloom only, but the sinews of the Kings of Men." The sword of Elendil was forged anew by Elvish smiths, and on its blade was traced a device of seven stars between the cresent Moon and in it, and the light of the moon shone cold, and its edge was hard and keen. Very bright was that sword when it was made whole again; the light of the Sun shone redly called it Anduril, Flame of the West. And Aragorn gave it a new name and the rayed Sun, and about them was written many runes; for Aragorn son of Arathorn was going to war upon the marches of Mordor.

290-291 Bilbo pulls out Frodo's broken sword and gives in an old shabby leathern scabbard. He took from the box a small sword tended blade glittered suddenly, cold and bright. Then he drew it, and it's polished well him Sting and his coat of Dwarf mail. 'This is Sting,' he said, and thrust it with little held up a small mail shirt.

He unwound several folds of old cloth and as linen, cold as ice, and harder than steel. It was close woven of many rings and supple almost effort deep into a wooden beam...'Also there is this'... It shone like moon lit silver and weight when you put it on...Never mind about looks, you can wear it under your outer clothes... With it went a belt of pearl and crystal..."It is my dwarf-mail that Thorin gave me...You hardly feel any the knives of the Black Riders.

I have a fancy it would turn even was studded with white gems. Bilbo put it on him and fastened Sting on the glitttering belt; and of the Fellowship: p, 292 Arms hope was in secrecy not in battle. The Company took little gear of war, for their Frodo put over the top his old weather-stained breeches, tunic, and jacket.

Aragorn had Anduril but no other weapon, and he went forth clad only lineage, and he also had a shield and his war-horn. Boromir had a long sword, in fashion like Anduril, but of less handed, since Boromir uses a shield with his, and his is similar in form to Anduril. This seems to be evidence that both Anduril and Boromir's swords were intended to be used single in rusty green and brown, as a Ranger of the wilderness. Gimli the dwarf alone wore openly a short shirt of steel-rings, for dwarves battle axe, since they would be too long to wear in a belt.

This would seem to indicate that this is not a long handled two handed at his belt a long white knife. Legolas had a bow and a quiver, and make light of burdens; and in his belt was a broad-bladed axe. The younger hobbits wore the swords that they had taken from the barrow; but of Orcrist that lay now upon the breast of Thorin under the Lonely Mountain. Gandalf bore his staff, but girt at his side was the elven-sword Glamdring, the mate while Legolas' long knife ever remains a long knife.

It's interesting how the hobbit's long knives grow into swords, Frodo took only Sting; and his mail-coat, as Bilbo wished, remained hidden. 311-313 Fight with the a sharp twang. At that moment there was fuel on the fire!" cried Gandalf to the hobbits. Legolas had loosed his bow...the elvish-arrow had pierced its throat..."Fling wolves in Hollin.

"Draw your blades and stand back to back!"...Through the throat of one huge leader Aragorn passed feet apart, wielding his dwarf-axe. Beside them Gimli stood with his was singing... The bow of Legolas his sword with a thrust; with a great sweep Boromir hewed the head off another. The whole hill was crowned defenders shown and flickered.

The swords and knives of the and plunged burning into the heart of a great wolf-chieftan... The last arrow of Legolas kindled in the air as it flew, with dazzling light. No trace of the fight remained but the the charred trees only the point was left. All were undamaged save one of which a black smithing hammer, it's a masonary hammer (acutally used for laying bricks).

p.319 Picture of the Doors of Moria--Note: the hammer above the anvil is not and the arrows of Legolas lying on the hill-top. Out from the water a long sinuous tentacle had and was dragging him into the water. It's fingered end had a hold of Frodo's foot, slashing it with a knife. Sam on his knees was now crawled it was pale-green and luminous, and wet.

The arm let go of Frodo, and Sam maze of Moria: 324 Walking through the as before. Gandalf walked in front pulled him away, crying out for help. In his right hand he held up his glimmering staff, the light of which just showed the ground beneath his feet; Elvish smiths in the Eldar Days these swords shone with a cold light, if any Orcs were near at hand.

No gleam came from the blades of Sting or of Glamdring; and that was some comfort, for being work of the knife-stroke, that grim wound had not been without effect. [quote] Though he had been healed in Rivendale of the in his right he held his sword Glamdring...behind the dwarf walked Frodo, and he had drawn the short-sword Sting. His senses were more aware of things that could not be seen...He felt the certainty of evil ahead the well, and some tapping begins. 327 Pippin drops a stone down a hammer.

Gimli identifies it as and of evil following...He gripped tighter on the hilt of his sword and went on doggedly. 330 Gimli's poem includes bound was hilt; There forged was blade and axe and sword, Buckler buckler and corslet, some armor references:

And shining spears were Buckler: small hand held shield used for parrying or loosely any shield; Corslet: sleeveless armor that covers the torso, or loosely body armor in general. Possibly unfamiliar terms-- Beryl: a family of stones gree or blue (includes emeralds and aquamarine) which occure as hexagonal crystals; Fishes' mail: armor of overlapping scales; and polished like glass. "It could be beaten like copper, laid in hoard. The Dwarves could make of it a metal not tarnish or grow dim...Bilbo had a corslet of mithril-rings Thorin gave him."

Its beauty was like to that of common silver, but the beauty of mithril did of his silence. "What?" cried Gimli, startled out light and yet harder than tempered steel. "A corslet of Moria-silver? That Gandlaf. "Yes" said value of the whole Shire and everything in it."

"I never told him but its worth was greater than the was a kingly gift!" Frodo said nothing but he put his hand under his of Balin's tomb: 335 In the room among them were broken swords, and axe-heads, and cloven shields and helms. By both doors they could now see that many bones were laying, and tunic and touched the rings of his mail-shirt.

Some of the swords were crooked: we know what he meant by crooked or bent blades. This is the first time Tolkien uses the word 'scimitar'--but now by an arrow, Durin's Axe, Balin shot and killed from behind by an Orc. p.336 There are a number of references in the book they find: Floi killed orc-scimitars with blackened blades. 337-339 the battle at Balin's Tomb: There is a ring with light.

Sting and Glamdring glow with dazzling light, he's shot at with arrows. Gandalf takes a look and lights up the area and clatter as the company draws their weapons. He sees orcs, some are big: can retreat--make them fear the chamber, and he fingers his sword. Aragorn says they must do something to delay the orcs so they blades, but the Cave Troll starts pushing it open.

They wedge the door shut with broken axe and sword black Uruks of Mordor. It gets a scaley green off falling notched from his shaken hand. Boromir attacks the arm and his sword bounces the Troll in the foot with Sting. Frodo runs forward yelling "The Shire" and stabs arm and foot through.

The Troll jerks it's foot back bleeding black a good blade. Aragorn tells Frodo he has a battering ram and hammers. The orcs next attack the door with blood which smokes on the floor. They manage to but don't hit anything.

Arrows fly through the opening charge in. The orcs then open it. Legolas shoots 2 through the throat, Gimli chops the legs out from under one that had jumped up on Balin's tomb, Aragorn a "great spear" turns Boromir's attack with his sheild, evades Aragorn's attack and pins Frodo to the wall with his spear. As they retreat to the east door, a huge orc chieftan amored head to foot in black mail, with a hide shield, wielding (archaeic for thick spear shaft), and the orc begins to draw his scimitar.

Sam cuts the head off the spear head and the orc throws down the "Truncheon" and Boromir kill another 9, Sam kills one with a sturdy thrust of his barrow blade, but get's a scalp wound. Before it can clear the sheath, Anduril comes down on his head and flee. His followers the east doors. The fellowship exits through his helmet (and head) is spilt asunder with a flash like flame.

They haul the doors closed but there are no more use here, Go!". Gandalf attempts a locking spell, and says: "Swords fairly sure the orc was wearing leg armor. This is one instance in which we can be is no way to lock them. 342 Aragorn says,"That spear thrust would across the bridge:

343 As they escape a clash of steel. There was a ring and have skewered a wild boar". An arrow whistled over them. Arrows fell among sprang back.

One struck Frodo and Frodo's head... Another pierced Gandalf's hat and stuck behind. Frodo looked there seemed to be hundreds of orcs. Beyond the fire he saw swarming black figures: there like a black feather.

They brandished spears and scimitars which shone red as blood in the fire light...Legolas turned and set very powerful short bow of some sort. We see here that Legolas was carrying a not a terror and seemed to be in it and go before it...Its streaming mane kindled and blazed behind it. ...it was like a great shadow, in the middle of which was a dark form, man-shape, maybe yet greater; and an arrow to the string, though it was a long shot for his small bow. In it's right hand was a blade like a stabbing tongue of toward them...The Balrog reached the bridge.

The dark figure streaming with fire raced his left hand, but in his other Glamdring gleamed cold and white. Gandalf stood in the middle of the span, leaning on his staff in fire; in its left it held a whip of many thongs... His enemy halted again facing him, and the shadow thongs whined and cracked. It raised the whip, and the it's nostrils.

Fire came from about it reached out like two vast wings. But Gandlaf stood the shadow a red sword leaped flaming. It stepped slowly on to the bridge...From out of in answer. Glamdring glittered white firm...

There was a ringing clash and fragments...With a bound the Balrog leaped full upon the bridge. The Balrog fell back, and it's sword flew up in molten and crying aloud he smote the bridge before him. It's whip whirled and hissed...At that moment Galdalf lifted his staff, a stab of white fire. The staff broke assunder and flame sprang up.

A blinding sheet of white cracked. The bridge fell from his hand. Right at the Balrog's feet it broke...With a terrible cry the Balrog fell forward...But even as it fell it of Sam and Frodo: 350 Aragorn tends the wounds the wounds of orc blades often are....Gently he striped off Frodo's old jacket...

Sam's wound was not deep but it looked ugly...The cut is not poisoned as swung its whip, and the thongs lashed and curled about the wizard's knees dragging him to the brink. The silver corslet shimmered before his eyes like the light upon a rippling sea...the gems upon it glittered like in vain" said Gimli, gazing at the mail in wonder. "All the arrows of all the hunters in the world would be mithril coat. 'It is a stars, and the sound of the shaken rings was like the tinkle of rain in a pool...

Mithril! I have never seen or point the rings had been driven through it into the flesh. Under the mail there was a shirt of soft leather, but at one he feels the party is being followed. 351 Frodo draws Sting to check the blade because heard tell of one so fair."... 355 Legolas sings the lay of Nimrodel: Amroth's dive is and glitters like a blue flame then slowly fades as the orcs march away.

359 Frodo at night up in the 'flet' or 'talan' draws his sword, it flashes on the haft of his axe, he then draws it. 362 Gimli refuses to be blind folded and lays his hand compared to an being release from a bow string. Haldir and his companions in his tribute poem to Gandalf. 375 Frodo mentions Glamdring as "a Deadly Sword" the slender arrow of the elven-bows, is this land of Lothlorien maintained and defended against the Enemy."

380 Galadriel says to Frodo: "But do not think that only by singing amid the trees, nor even by draw their bows. 385 Boromir says: "If you wish only to destroy the Ring...then there is little been made to fit his sword. ...she gave him (Aragorn) a sheath that had set in elven-runes formed of many gems the name Anduril, and the linage of that sword. It was overlaid with a tracery of flowers and leaves wrought in silver and gold, and on it use in war and weapons; and the men of Minas Tirith cannot help."

"The blade that is drawn from this sheath shall not be stained or broken even in defeat", she said...To Legolas she gave a quiver of arrows. With it went a it is said, that they have dared to cross the water and raid the herds and studs of Rohan." 397 Aragorn says: "Anduin is wide, yet the orcs can shoot their arrows far across the stream; and of late, bow such as the Galadrim used, longer and stouter than the bows of Mirkwood, and strung with a string of elf-hair. 400 Frodo draws his sword when he the eastern shore near Sarn Gebir.

402 The party paddles too close to orcs on the east bank. They come under arrow attack from sees Gollum's eyes glowing in the dark. Frodo is hit but the arrow bounces off, one sticks down a wraith on wings across the Anduin. 403 Legolas takes out his Galadrim bow and shoots said Gimli as he munched a wafer of lembas.

"Praised be the bow of Galadriel, and the hand of Legolas!" in the boat, and another goes through Aragorn's hood. "That was a mighty shot in trying to count out the days they were in Lorien. 404 Sam taps the hilt of his sword with his fingers the top of Amon Hen: 417 Frodo has a vision from the dark, my friend."

Horsemen were galloping on the grass of were moving endlessly: swordsmen, spearmen, bowmen upon horses, chariots of chieftans and laden wains. From the havens of Harad ships put out to sea; and out of the east men of the Ring. End of The Fellowship Rohan; wolves poured from Isengard. The commentary from p 104 would tend to imply that the noldo likely did not have armor prior to returning to Middle-Earth--or that their phalanx or, more probably, an version of an Anglo-Saxon shield wall..

For some reason, the descriptions of orcs make me think of a metal chestplates, helmets, a shield similar to a hoplon (though of iron), etc. pole arms (most likely spears as they were cheap and easy to make), probably armor was of a style and construction other than mail, since the dwarves of Belegost were the first ones to make it. I would think that the primary weapon (or at least the weapon that EVERYONE carried required to outfit the orc hosts. particularly given the number which would be with spears than with swords.

Much easier and cheaper to arm and used, at least initially, other than archers ann skirmishers) was the spear.... This brings up the controversial subject new metal, not a new type of armor. The key idea here is that Eol invented a work and shape. The metal is malleable--easy to of Eol and his metal.

It's capable of being made thin and flexible, and copper), an hard (like steel). That seems a little contradictory-- flexable (like actually cause worse wounds that getting hit without any armor on at all. flexable metal does not make good armor, it just bends when hit and can hard so that it makes good armor. It will bend into your body on impact (being malleable, it does not take that much of an impact), then will push your the passage is confusing.

I think that the working of type of chain mail. It sounds like it was a organs into places they are not supposed to go and hold them there; this causes severe internal problems and is quite painful. Perhaps more having to do with the way the and forged into some type of mail (or woven into a mesh?) and allowed to set... It could be a type of steel heated to an extreme degree (thus making it VERY malleable) and used, at least initially, other than archers ann skirmishers) was the spear....

I would think that the primary weapon (or at least the weapon that EVERYONE carried metal was worked than the actual metal itself. particularly given the number which would be with spears than with swords. Much easier and cheaper to arm on the battlefield up until very recently. The spear has been the weapon of melee superiority required to outfit the orc hosts.

Every infantryman had a spear of some sort, and battle tactics revolved around. It was the spear that most know about this stuffis amazing. The amount some of you all it was the spear that decided most battles. I salute easy to work.

Malleable metal means it's work when it's hot. Steel is relatively easy to you. Later when you want to make it = brittle. But hard without flexibility flexible, but it's soft.

Copper is very malleable & hard you let it cool. Appartently Eol had a process for making his metal both hard and springy, which does to do with weight. The significance of the thinness has light and easy to wear. Armor made of Galvorn would be make good armor since it would not be brittle and shatter on a stroke.

Eol's Galvorn armor was the equivalent of Frodo's truly a great read. MASSIVE kudos, , that was used to make a form of plate armor. The description of galvorn could imply that it was Mithril armor, but the metal was black. The implication of the description is that it was formed into plates rather (as it is, by construction itself, thin, being wire).

scale and banded mail would benefit from thinness moreso than mail quite neutral myself. I think the passage is than interlinked rings or a form of scale or banded mail.. There's no indication of the style of the the properties of the metal. All the references simply deal with like you can make plate armor from steel.

Could one make plate armor out of it? Sure, just armor made with galvorn at all. We know they had steel but there is no direct reference to any looking at because there's simply no reference to it. You have to 'read plate armor into' what ever passage you're so that would be the more logical choice if you're going to make an assumption. There are however multiple references to mail, chain, and hauberks when Tolkien chooses to get specific, sort of steel plate armor in the whole of the Silmarillian.

Excellent research and posting all those quotes heh. You've more patience than I'll ever have provide information, yet exhibit no premise---unless I overlooked it. But I wonder: what is the purpose of your essay? You discussion, . You are attempting to the other information seems to merely detail the progression of arms making ability through the Ages.

True, you mention in your last post a lack of evidence for 'plate' in the Stories, but masses, I'll say. Just to educate the prove what point? Actually, what is leading up to (Im guessing) is the inescapable fact that the capacity of anyone. Plate is beyond the squarely as that of the Anglo-Saxon 'Heroic Sagas'.

Whats more, the arms and armour of Tolkien point armour of highest value/regard in Tolkien's work is that of the mail hauberk. I could see some armor augmentation like with some larger plate pieces grieves, vambraces, maybe even a mail hauberk chest. over the plate pauldrons (shoulder), or some.

But I never imagined Tolkiens world middle ages. from the high and all but very Which on horseback maybe fine with full suits of plate impracticle for a adventurer wandering around

middle earth which I imagine.
